Storm Chaos in Durban: Emergency Crews on Standby Amid Rising Flood Risks

Emergency teams in Durban are bracing for another wave of heavy rainfall on Friday after overnight storms caused flooding in several areas across the city. Weather officials have issued strong warnings as the region continues to face hazardous conditions.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a level 4 alert for disruptive rains and severe thunderstorms in KwaZulu-Natal, particularly around eThekwini, with residents urged to prepare for possible flooding and damage to infrastructure.

The eThekwini Municipality said dangerous driving conditions were expected and called on residents to remain indoors and limit travel as much as possible. Emergency crews remain on standby and are actively monitoring affected zones.

ALS Paramedics reported extensive flooding in multiple locations and cautioned motorists to take extra safety measures when on the roads.

“We have received many reports of localised flooding. This includes large water puddles that have formed all over Durban. The hotspots are the M19 Umgeni Road under the N2 bridge, North Coast Road, the M4 near Riverside and the M13 near Fields Hill. The M19 and the M7 are extremely wet and dangerous,” said ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson.

“We urge all motorists to leave a little earlier and travel only if you have to. Ensure your windscreen wipers and tyres are in good condition. Please drive with your headlights on so you are clearly visible to other road users and increase your following distance to allow stopping should you need to,” he added.
