The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Mpumalanga is pushing for an investigation into nurses at Tonga Hospital in Nkomazi after a viral video showed a nurse assaulting a naked patient, Lydia Makhoba, who had been admitted for diabetic foot and hypertension.

According to Mpumalanga Mirror, Makhoba’s daughter alleged that her mother was mistreated and physically abused by a nurse after falling off her hospital bed. Makhoba died on Thursday, three weeks after her admission.

SABC News reports that DA Member of the Provincial Legislature, Bosman Grobler, has called on the Health Professions Council of South Africa to investigate the incident and for the Provincial Department of Health to enforce stricter disciplinary measures to prevent future cases of medical negligence.

“The Democratic Alliance in Mpumalanga calls on the Health Professionals Council of South Africa to intervene and investigate the Mpumalanga nurses who went viral recently for assaulting and mistreating a naked patient at the Tonga Hospital,” Grobler said.

He further emphasized the need for the Provincial Department of Health to take decisive action, stating that ongoing cases of medical negligence continue to cost the department billions in legal claims.
