DA Calls for National Investigation into City Power’s Governance

Published

on

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johannesburg has formally asked the National Treasury and the Auditor General to look into the governance issues and alleged financial mismanagement within City Power. This request follows a startling exposé in News24, which implicated the CEO of City Power in knowing about corruption and maladministration, yet failing to take action.

The DA expressed concern over City Power’s repeated refusal to comply with their Promotion of Access to Information (PAIA) requests, highlighting how ingrained this lack of accountability is. The party learned through media reports that City Power would not respond to their requests for crucial information.

This is not the first time the DA has sought intervention. In November 2024, they wrote to the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) and the Attorney General, urging an investigation into what they believe are violations of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA). The issues raised in the exposé align with the very same details the DA had initially sought through their PAIA requests.

The DA asserts that the alleged involvement of the CEO in corruption is just the surface of a much deeper problem. While Johannesburg residents continue to suffer from ongoing power outages and businesses face regular closures due to the electricity crisis, the DA believes that the real issue lies within the entrenched corruption at City Power.
