DA Urges Dissolution of Joburg Water Board to Resolve City’s Water Crisis
DA Demands Joburg Water Board Dissolution to Address Johannesburg’s Water Crisis
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johannesburg has called once more for the dissolution of the Johannesburg Water board. DA Shadow MMC for Infrastructure, Cllr. Nicole van Dyk, claims that ineffective management and political appointments have worsened the city’s water crisis. While Executive Mayor Dada Morero recently promised an extra R1 billion for the water budget, infrastructure issues persist.
Infrastructure Problems and Lack of Resources
Johannesburg Water loses nearly half (46%) of its water due to leaks, aging pipes, and failing infrastructure. The DA points to underfunding and politically aligned board members as key reasons behind these challenges. Although the organization aims to repair leaks and burst pipes within 48 hours, it only has 55% of the vehicles it needs for the job.
Need for Accountability and Expert Leadership
The DA also rejects claims that high water use by residents is the main issue. Instead, it blames poor city management. The party demands comprehensive audits of the board and calls for technical experts, rather than political elites, to lead Johannesburg Water.
Moving Forward with Solutions
To resolve Johannesburg’s water crisis, the DA emphasizes appointing leaders with relevant technical skills. They argue that only an experienced and effective board can address the water crisis, stabilizing access for all residents and supporting the city’s economy.
