DA Calls for Urgent Lifestyle and Skills Audits in Johannesburg Governance Crisis

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has escalated its concerns over governance failures in Johannesburg, formally requesting urgent intervention from national ministers. The party has written to the Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Velenkosini Hlabisa, the Minister of Public Services and Administration, Inkosi Mzamo Buthelezi, and the Auditor General, demanding lifestyle and skills audits for senior city officials.
The DA’s demand follows a scathing report from the Auditor General, which flagged inefficiencies, lack of capability, and possible misuse of city resources. DA representative Belinda Kaiser Echeozonjoku expressed concerns over potential fraud and irregular procurement practices.
“The City of Johannesburg officials are not capable, not efficient, and not productive,” Echeozonjoku told Radio Islam International, suggesting that some may be abusing procurement processes for personal benefit.
The DA initially called on Johannesburg’s Executive Mayor to implement the audits, but after receiving no response, they took the matter to national ministers.
“The Executive Mayor, as the City’s first citizen, should be spearheading this initiative, yet there has been no acknowledgment of our request,” Echeozonjoku stated.
The DA also pointed to Johannesburg’s deepening water crisis, which it attributes to corruption and mismanagement at Johannesburg Water. The party has previously called for the dissolution of the utility’s board, alleging undue political influence in procurement.
“The City is collapsing before our eyes,” Echeozonjoku warned.
Further concerns stem from the City’s repeated legal losses. Johannesburg has lost multiple court cases on land preservation, environmental issues, and service provider disputes. The DA argues that these failures indicate incompetence or conflicts of interest among city officials.
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has previously recommended lifestyle audits for officials, but no action has been taken. The DA insists that ignoring these reports reflects a disregard for Johannesburg residents.
“Public representatives are elected to serve residents. Ignoring these reports is a complete disregard for the people of Johannesburg,” Echeozonjoku said.
The DA awaits a response from national officials, emphasizing that these audits are essential to restoring transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the City of Johannesburg.
