Limpopo on Alert as Cyclone Dikeledi Nears Mozambique, No Immediate Threat to SA

Published

The Limpopo premier, Dr. Phophi Ramathuba, has urged vigilance as Cyclone Dikeledi approaches Mozambique. Though currently posing no direct threat to South Africa, the cyclone’s proximity raises concerns for areas bordering Limpopo.

Cyclone Dikeledi, initially a severe tropical storm near the Comoros Islands with winds of 90–100 km/h, strengthened as it moved into the Mozambique Channel. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) confirmed on Tuesday that the cyclone is moving south-easterly, away from South Africa. Despite this, Limpopo’s disaster management team remains on high alert.

Dr. Ramathuba emphasized the importance of preparedness, urging residents to monitor official updates, avoid spreading misinformation, and take precautions, especially in flood-prone areas. The premier stated:

“The safety of our communities remains our utmost priority. We will provide timely updates and ensure necessary measures are in place.”

Recent Flooding in Limpopo

Recent heavy rains in Limpopo have caused significant disruptions:

  • Road Closures: Several roads, including the R510 at Palm Park and Tamboti Bridge, are closed due to flooding.
  • Hospital Evacuations: Witpoort Hospital in Lephalale was evacuated as the overflowing Palala Dam posed a threat. Residents needing care are directed to alternative clinics and hospitals.

Authorities have warned residents to avoid crossing flooded bridges and to keep children away from rivers and streams.

Weather Service Reassures Public

SAWS clarified that Cyclone Dikeledi poses no immediate danger to South Africa, advising against unnecessary panic.

“The cyclone will move away from South Africa. The country remains clear from potential risks associated with this weather system,” SAWS stated.

Residents are encouraged to:

  • Check official weather updates.
  • Follow guidance from disaster management teams.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas.

With disaster management teams on standby, Limpopo remains prepared to respond to any potential impacts as the weather situation evolves.
