Cosmo City Gets a Mobility Makeover: New Super Stops and Pedestrian-Friendly Upgrades Unveiled

In a significant step toward improving urban mobility, the City of Johannesburg and the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) have unveiled Phase One of the Cosmo City Super Stops and Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) Facilities project. On Monday, 24 February, Cllr Eunice Mgcina, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Development Planning, and JDA CEO Themba Mathibe conducted an oversight visit to assess progress on this transformative initiative.

A Vision for Inclusive Mobility

The 3.5km corridor, stretching from Malibongwe Drive to Russia Avenue along South Africa Drive in Ward 100, is designed to enhance pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure while improving public transport amenities. The project aligns with the City’s vision of creating a well-connected, inclusive, and accessible urban environment.

“This project is more than just about infrastructure; it is about providing communities with safe, efficient, and dignified mobility options,” said Mathibe during the visit. “By improving pedestrian pathways, installing proper lighting, and addressing stormwater issues, we are ensuring that the people of Cosmo City experience a safer and more sustainable urban environment.”

Key Features of the Project

The Cosmo City Super Stops and NMT Facilities project includes several innovative features aimed at improving mobility and safety:

  • Mini-Bus Taxi Lay-Bys and Bus Stop Shelters: These upgrades will make public transport more accessible and convenient for residents.
  • Landscaping and Public Environment Upgrades: The project will create safer, more aesthetically pleasing spaces for the community.
  • Walkways and Street Lighting: Enhanced pathways and lighting will improve safety and security for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Stormwater Management: Addressing localized drainage issues will reduce flooding risks and ensure safer travel during rainy seasons.

Community Benefits and Job Creation

The project is being implemented using labour-intensive methods under the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). This approach not only ensures high-quality construction but also provides job opportunities and skills development for local community members. By involving residents in the project, the City and JDA are fostering a sense of ownership and pride in the new infrastructure.

Engaging the Community

During the oversight visit, MMC Mgcina led a Community Outreach Programme to inform residents about the services offered by the Development Planning Department. She also participated in an interview on Cosmo FM 90.5, a local community radio station, to engage directly with the audience and address their questions.

“We appreciate the community’s continued support and encourage them to take ownership in preserving the infrastructure developments that benefit them,” said Mgcina. Her engagement highlighted the importance of community involvement in ensuring the long-term success of the project.

A Commitment to Sustainable Development

The Cosmo City Super Stops and NMT Facilities project is a testament to the City of Johannesburg and JDA’s commitment to sustainable urban development. By prioritizing mobility, safety, and socio-economic benefits, the project aims to improve the quality of life for all residents.

As Phase One nears completion, the City and JDA are already looking ahead to future phases, ensuring that Cosmo City remains a model for inclusive and accessible urban development. For residents, the project promises not just improved infrastructure, but a brighter, more connected future.
