A 41-year-old Congolese man, accused of assaulting and torturing patrons at Pretoria’s Zanzou nightclub, has pleaded for bail, citing financial hardship for his family. Facing numerous charges, including eight counts of compelled sexual assault and six counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, he denies the allegations and claims to have been subjected to police brutality, The Citizen reported.

During his bail application in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Friday, the accused offered R3,000 as bail and pledged to comply with all conditions. He expressed surprise at the accusations and claimed innocence in his affidavit, according to Times Live.

“I was surprised by the allegations made against me,” he stated, while insisting that he had strong ties to South Africa, holding a valid asylum seeker visa. Despite lacking a passport, he assured the court that he had no intention to flee the country, citing his family and financial obligations as reasons to stay.

The accused further alleged police brutality during his arrest, claiming he was subjected to waterboarding and that R8,000 in cash had gone missing during the process.

The state, however, opposed his bail application, labeling him a flight risk and a danger to the community, especially considering the public outrage over the case. The court has postponed the matter to April 3 for further arguments and a potential ruling.
