Cape Town’s Silvermine Fire Destroys 3,000 Hectares

Published

Capetonians have been urged to avoid parts of the South Peninsula as firefighters continue to contain a blaze that scorched thousands of hectares over the weekend.

The fire, which erupted in the Silvermine section of Table Mountain National Park on Friday evening, has already destroyed around 3,000 hectares of vegetation. Authorities are still investigating the cause, and while arson has not been confirmed, it hasn’t been ruled out either.

A 37-year-old man is expected to appear in court this Wednesday for allegedly starting a fire in a conservation area. However, police have clarified there is currently no evidence linking him directly to the Table Mountain National Park incident.

Firefighters have been working around the clock to control the spread. One firefighter injured in the line of duty on Sunday is now recovering at home, according to the City of Cape Town’s fire department.

Meanwhile, residents who were temporarily evacuated as a precautionary measure over the weekend have returned to their homes as conditions improved.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and have asked the public to remain clear of affected areas until further notice.
