Family Ceremony Turns Shocking as Relative Arrested for Rape and Attempted Rape in Cacadu

What began as a traditional family ceremony in Cacadu Extension, Eastern Cape, ended in horror over the weekend when a 28-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping one family member and attempting to rape another.

According to police spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, the incident took place in the early hours of Saturday, April 26, during a family gathering at a homestead. Two sisters — aged 38 and 28 — had been allocated a room to sleep in for the event.

At around 4am, the older sister allegedly woke up to find someone undressing her in the dark before being raped.

“Fearing for her life, the victim could not scream as she claimed not to have known whether the suspect was in possession of a weapon, since the lights were off in the room,” said Mgolodela.

The suspect allegedly then turned to the younger sister, attempting to remove her jeans, but she managed to resist and fight him off. During the struggle, one of the sisters turned on the light — and they were shocked to discover the attacker was their own relative.

Pleas and Arrest

In a desperate bid to avoid arrest, the suspect reportedly begged the family elders not to contact police, revealing he was already facing court proceedings for another rape case.

“He allegedly attempted to run but was caught,” said Mgolodela.

The family detained the suspect and called authorities. He was arrested on Sunday, April 27, and is due to appear at the Cacadu Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, April 29.

Growing Concern Over Gender-Based Violence

Reacting to the disturbing incident, District Commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph expressed deep concern.

“I am saddened by the alarming rate of incidents of gender-based violence,” said Adolph. “We trust the justice system will deliver a retributive sentence if the accused is found guilty.”

The case adds to South Africa’s troubling pattern of gender-based violence, where victims are often targeted by those closest to them. It also raises questions about community responsibility and the importance of breaking the silence in such traumatic situations.

This deeply disturbing case underscores the urgent need for systemic change and continued public awareness around gender-based violence in South Africa. As the suspect faces court, the nation watches — hoping justice will be served for the survivors of this devastating family betrayal.
