Two Brazilian Drug Traffickers Arrested with Cocaine at OR Tambo International Airport
Two Brazilian drug traffickers, aged 30 and 35, were arrested on Sunday after arriving at OR Tambo International Airport from São Paulo, Brazil, with a significant amount of cocaine in their possession.
Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Van Wyk, a spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS), confirmed the arrests, adding that the suspects would face drug trafficking charges in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court this week.
Cocaine Seized in Luggage and Swallowed Capsules
One of the traffickers was found carrying over 4 kilograms of cocaine in his luggage. Meanwhile, a medical x-ray revealed that the other trafficker had swallowed drug-filled capsules—often referred to as “bullets.” To date, 15 of these cocaine-filled capsules have been recovered from his system.
Second Major Drug Bust in a Week
This is the second major drug bust at OR Tambo within the span of just a week. On Friday, police intercepted a shipment of R6 million worth of crystal meth, which was concealed in a pool table at a warehouse located inside the airport.
SAPS National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola commended the police for their quick and efficient response in both drug busts. Athlenda Mathe, SAPS spokesperson, confirmed that investigators are following leads to trace the origin of these drugs and identify those responsible for trafficking them into the country.
“We are following up on all leads to determine the origin of the drugs in South Africa, as well as who delivered the consignment,” Mathe said, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking.
She praised the vigilance of OR Tambo International Airport police officers, noting their consistent success in intercepting large quantities of drugs. Mathe encouraged continued vigilance, sending a clear message to drug traffickers and cartels that authorities remain on high alert at one of the country’s busiest entry points.
