Johannesburg Celebrates the Largest Hindu Temple in the Southern Hemisphere

Johannesburg has made history with the inauguration of the largest Hindu temple and cultural complex in the Southern Hemisphere—the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir. Located in Northriding, the grand opening drew thousands of attendees last week, marking a significant milestone for the Hindu community and the city itself.
The temple spans an impressive 37,000 square meters and is designed as both a spiritual sanctuary and a cultural hub. It is expected to play a pivotal role in fostering interfaith dialogue, promoting humanitarian efforts, and enriching cultural experiences for people of all backgrounds.
Built by the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), a globally respected spiritual and volunteer-driven organization, the temple includes a 2,500 square meter Hindu mandir and a state-of-the-art cultural complex. The temple also offers several community spaces, such as a research institute, classrooms, an auditorium, and a banquet hall, designed to support educational, spiritual, and social growth.
Sustainability played a key role in the construction of the complex, with solar-ready technology, water-efficient systems, and over 500 trees planted to promote environmental conservation.
Deputy President Paul Mashatile, who attended the opening, highlighted the temple’s significance. “Built by thousands of volunteers, this iconic centre is the first of its kind on the African continent, bringing together people from all walks of life,” Mashatile said. He also shared his personal experience of being welcomed with traditional Hindu rituals, including being garlanded, tied with a sacred thread, and marked with a red dot (Chandlo) on his forehead by senior BAPS leaders.
This event follows the recent opening of another BAPS temple in Abu Dhabi in 2024, inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, further expanding the global impact of the Swaminarayan faith.
