AfriForum Backtracks on Farm Murder Stats as Cabinet Cracks Down on Misinformation

Published

on

Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, has revealed that AfriForum has backtracked on its disputed farm murder statistics after a meeting with the South African Police Service (SAPS). The admission comes as Cabinet intensifies its crackdown on misinformation campaigns by right-wing groups, including Solidarity and AfriForum.

Speaking during a post-Cabinet media briefing, Ntshavheni confirmed that law enforcement agencies are investigating alleged violations by these organizations. “AfriForum conceded that the current statistics released by the Minister of Police are accurate, including on farm murders,” she said.

This development follows AfriForum’s controversial meeting with US officials last month, where they sought international intervention on land expropriation. The government has since dismissed these efforts as part of a broader misinformation campaign.

Cabinet Addresses Key Issues

Beyond misinformation, Cabinet discussed several pressing matters:

1. Employment Gains Amid Economic Struggles

Despite slight improvements in trade, business services, transport, and electricity sectors, unemployment remains high. “Cabinet is committed to structural reforms to boost job creation,” Ntshavheni stated.

2. SASSA Card Migration Deadline Extended

Over a million beneficiaries have switched to the new SASSA cards, but 800,000 still need to migrate. The deadline has been extended to April to ensure no one is left behind.

3. G20 Summit Preparations Underway

Seven of South Africa’s 12 World Heritage Sites are ready to host G20 delegates, though minor upgrades are needed for an optimal visitor experience.

As the government pushes back against misinformation, the focus remains on economic recovery, social security, and global engagements. With AfriForum’s concession, the debate over farm murders may finally see some clarity—but the fight against disinformation is far from over.
