312 Trees Slated for Removal in Parkhurst

The Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) is in the process of implementing a project to remove 312 trees along the Delta-Orlando 88-kilovolt (kV) power servitude in the Parkhurst area. The JCPZ, responsible for public open spaces in Johannesburg, emphasized that while they typically protect trees under strict open space by-laws, this removal is necessary for the safety of Parkhurst residents.

The trees in question range from 10 to 15 meters in height and have encroached upon the 88kV overhead powerlines, leading to frequent power outages in the area. Failure to remove these trees could result in damage to City Power’s infrastructure, including the substation and transformer, as well as potential safety hazards.

The trees have also become an earthing source for the powerlines, and if not removed, they could cause power supply disruptions, fires, ongoing outages, and even fatalities. The project will be carried out in two phases, with the first phase expected to take three to five weeks, and residents in the affected area will be kept informed.

Despite the removal project, the JCPZ remains committed to the environment and plans to plant 500 trees in the region during the arbour month and the new financial year. Trees are crucial in mitigating climate change by absorbing air pollutants and providing clean oxygen, contributing to the city’s aesthetic appeal and residents’ well-being.

As of September 28, the project was temporarily on hold to allow City Power to inform residents of the power isolation required for the tree removal.
