12-year wait for Wolmer resident to get house ends in joy
A 38-year-old woman from Wolmer in the north of Pretoria has finally received the keys to her long-awaited home after a staggering 12-year wait.
Angelique Stemmet’s story began over a decade ago when she applied for a government housing project aimed at providing affordable homes to residents in need.
The Wolmer woman has faced challenges while navigating the bureaucratic maze of housing applications.
Each year brought new frustrations and delays, with Stemmet finding herself in limbo, unsure of when her dreams would materialize.
Although the house is not in good condition, she said it was a dream come true to have a place she could finally call home.
“I am so grateful to our councillor for making my dream of owning a home come true.
“Every time I thought I was close, there would be another setback but I never lost hope,” recalled Stemmer.
The turning point in Stemmet’s journey came earlier this month when she was informed that her application had finally been approved.
Overwhelmed with joy, she described that moment as surreal.
“The house is more than just bricks and mortar, it’s a foundation for my family’s future.
“I will not extend it, will leave it as it is but will do some revamping,” she said.
She said being patient is what kept her not to giving up.
“All I can say to those who are facing the same situation I faced is that patience is a virtue, just keep on praying, and it will happen.”
Ward 2 councillor Quentin Meyer said affordable housing is a fundamental right and everyone in Ward 2 must have access to a safe and secure home.
“When I became the councillor, one of my missions was to get people houses because people don’t have houses, they live on the streets so it’s my responsibility that everyone get proper shelter.
