The future for cricket is bright in Sandton

July closed on an active note in Sandton, with cricket at Grayston Preparatory School – where U11 club sides played their hearts out.

In a beautiful showcasing of dedication to cricket, the Cover Drive side met Legends for a T20 format-friendly match on July 28.

Parent to one of the players, Alan Rabatin, couldn’t hold in how impressed he was at the competitiveness being displayed on the pitch by the young cricketers, describing the sport as ‘a lifestyle’.

“It’s incredible how competitive these players are at this age; it’s good practice towards the professional leagues for these players,” Rabatin said. “We can’t just play part-time cricket like in the old days, it’s a fulltime profession, even at the age of 11.”

Rabatin also reflected on the commitment shown by parents in support of their children’s development in sports.

“As parents, we give up our weekends and weekdays just to keep these young players on track, especially with children participating in league sports all the time,” he concluded.

The Cover Drive U11 side, with a total score of 194/4, won against Legends by 71 runs. Legends scored 123/9 in the friendly cricket meeting between the two junior clubs.

On the second field, the Cover Drive U9 team was playing for fun, after their opponents for the morning failed to show, forfeiting the match.
