Theo Dreyer shines at World Marathon Championships in Croatia
The Grade 12 learner, Theo Dreyer, from St David’s Marist College in Sandton recently displayed his talent and dedication as a paddler by representing South Africa at the ICF World Marathon Championships in Metkovic, Croatia, from September 19 to 22.
Having been selected multiple times to compete internationally, Theo’s participation in the K2 event alongside Tyde Malherbe from the Eastern Cape resulted in completing the challenging marathon course in an impressive time of 1 hour and 38 minutes, as reported by Jennie Dallas.
Their performance in Croatia was attributed to years of training and preparation, starting from local provincial selections, progressing to national trials, and finally representing the country on the global stage.
The ICF World Marathon Championships gather top paddlers worldwide, challenging their skills in long-distance racing and portaging, a critical skill involving lifting the kayak out of the water and running a short distance before continuing paddling.
Dallas emphasized that Theo’s success in this demanding discipline showcased his agility, strength, and strategic thinking, reflecting his passion for the sport and setting an inspiring example for future South African athletes.
Theo remarked, “It was hard but lekker.”
