Gauteng bowler clinches gold in open bowls tournament
The Johannesburg Bowls Association (JBA) Gauteng Open Bowls tournament concluded at the Morningside Country Club on July 28, with the club’s bowlers receiving positive feedback. The club’s bowling teams secured gold in men’s fours, pairs, singles, and mixed pairs, along with a bronze in the women’s fours.
During the award ceremony, singles’ tournament champion Jason Evans shared insights on his approach to the greens and how he manages the nerves during championship matches.
“It’s probably the experience, more than anything. Having been in the championship situation quite a few times helps,” mentioned Evans. “I’ve been playing for quite a while, I think it’s 30-plus years. Playing alongside good players like Gerry Baker, you get into a mode where you walk on the green quite calmly, as it becomes like a second nature type of thing.”
Reflecting on the finals, Evans noted that he felt his opponent had performed better than the final score indicated.
“I won 21–8, but I feel it was more of a 21–15; he played well. He’s a newish bowler who’s going to be really good in a couple of years’ time,” Evans observed. “It’s nice to see youngsters coming through and challenging us. I wouldn’t want to face him again in a few years because he’s going to be really good.”
Evans concluded by expressing his feelings when bowling on the greens.
“Having played a lot of international bowls, representing South Africa, that experience helps in these situations,” shared Evans. “You find a happy place, play your bowls, and try not to let external factors bother you. It always seems to work out.”
