Local cycling star heading to world championship
One of the most promising young cyclists in South Africa, Travis Rademan-Ludeke, a matric boy from Pretoria, is on his way to Europe, where he will compete in the International Cycling Union (UCI) World Championships in Zurich, Switzerland later this month.
Rademan-Ludeke already broke through on the national radar as a 15-year old cyclist in 2021, when he was crowned South African national youth champion for road racing.
In February this year, Rademan-Ludeke was crowned as the new junior SA champion, when he won this category at the National Road Championships in Midvaal.
Now he will also get his chance on the international stage, when he will take on the world’s best at the UCI World Championships.
“I am proud to be selected to represent South Africa at the UCI World Championships in Zurich, I believe most cyclists have a dream to take their sport to the highest level and compete against the best athletes in the world,” Rademan-Ludeke said shortly after he was named as part of the SA team.
The versatile Rademan-Ludeke also actively races in various Mountain Bike & XCO (Cross Country Olympic) MTB races. He currently leads the Cycle Lab High School Series in the Junior Category, where he represents Pretoria Boys High School.
Rademan-Ludeke recently won the Race to the Sun, a 50 miler road race hosted at Sun City as well as other one day classics.
“I am thankful for the opportunity and appreciate the support from my team (Project Dream SA), my coach, my family and my friends,” Rademan-Ludeke remarked.
The UCI 2024 Road & Para-Cycling Road World Championships take place in Zurich Switzerland from 21 – 29 September 2024.
According to Cycling SA this prestigious event will bring together the best cyclists from all over the world. Around 1000 riders from about 75 nations will participate in the championship.
Cycling SA is sending 16 cyclists and two officials to the event. The South African team includes one elite male rider, five under-23 men, five under-23 and elite women, two junior men and three para-riders (men). Rademan-Ludeke is one of the two juniors.
The championships will feature challenging courses, with the Women’s Road Race covering a total of 154.1 km and 2384m of elevation, the Men’s Road Race spanning 273.9 km with 4470m of climbing, and the Para-cycling event comprising a 70.2 km course with 829m of elevation.
