Gym builds a healthy community
The Alberton Sports and Fitness Centre, which has been on the block for almost two decades, prides itself as a fitness centre promoting physical well-being and development.
While working with various stakeholders in the community, they mostly focus on spearheading exciting programmes to keep young minds healthy.
The New Redruth gym is where health enthusiasts gain their muscles and burn sweat, and it’s a happy place for its many members.
According to fitness centre manager Otis Blume, they impact the community positively and intend to bring sports to the community.
“As a local gym, we have taken it upon ourselves to go over and above to promote healthy living and bring sports to the Alberton community. We work with schools, hospitals, the local SAPS, and correctional centres. We are all about community development and bringing the community together. We’re still in the top line of one of the best gyms in the community,” he said.
They have squash courts, a ladies’ gym, a spinning studio, a spa area, aerobic classes, and tailor-made showers.
“We stand for unity and love, and the right way to describe us is ‘a gym full of love’. When you walk in here, you can feel the love from the reception, the passion, the greeting and the energy.
“We’re a family, and that’s one thing that has kept us going. People walk in here stressed. When they leave, all that is left behind. We have loyal members as far back as 17 years who are still with us because of the legacy we’re building,” Blume said.
Clive de Vos, who owns the Alberton Sports and Fitness Centre, said the gym is not just a business for them.
“We are part of the community. When you have a complaint about something at the gym, the owners are available to speak to. We are open and available to the members. Our focus is mostly on learners because they are the future of tomorrow.
“We are bringing in those children and giving them a purpose by keeping them in the gym. We’ve got instructors who help with fitness programmes,” he said.
He said they were open to helping schools with their sports programmes.
Vimbai Mpomfu, an employee at the gym, said, “Compared to other gyms, here we’re a family and work with our members to help them achieve their health goals. We are a loving home. You see this with our bosses, who often greet members by their first names.”
