Garsfontein High School Rugby Team Achieves Historic Success in 2024 Season

In the annals of Hoërskool Garsfontein, the 2024 rugby season will be remembered as the year when the school’s first rugby team, the Garsie Bere, truly displayed their character and resilience.

During the annual rugby social evening attended by parents, sponsors, and supporters of the school’s rugby program, the team’s indomitable spirit and perseverance were highlighted.

Following their successful defense of the Noordvaal Cup championship title in the top division, the Garsie Bere has solidified its position among the best rugby schools in the country. Leon Bantjes, the head of Garsfontein, acknowledged this achievement, stating that the school is now highly sought after for top tournaments across the country.

Ross van Reenen, the CEO of the Cheetahs Rugby Union and former Free State lock, shared insights during the dinner event. Van Reenen, also the author of the bestselling book “From Locker Room to Boardroom: Converting rugby talent into business success,” emphasized the importance of preparing rugby players for life beyond the sport.

Van Reenen highlighted concerning statistics regarding the academic and life preparation of South African rugby players compared to countries like New Zealand and Australia. He stressed that the future of professional rugby may be influenced by the model followed in France, where clubs are operated with the support of private equity partners.
