Local Flavors and Melodies Unite at the Kota Festival

The Soweto Kota Festival has recently announced its highly anticipated return, scheduled for September 2 & 3, marking its sixth anniversary. The festival is set to take place at its familiar location, Soweto’s Elkah Cricket Oval stadium in Rockville. It has gained a reputation as one of the largest events in Soweto, significantly boosting the township’s economy.

Various activities and festivities will unfold during the two-day festival, celebrating the iconic township staple. This kota will receive a creative twist from some of Gauteng’s beloved kota vendors.

Sidwell Tshingilane, the event’s enthusiastic organiser and founder, expressed his excitement for the event’s return. He noted its six-year history of overwhelming public response and even interest from other townships, including requests from as far as Botswana. Tshingilane emphasised the establishment of a robust event brand and the consistent support of corporate sponsors, contributing to the event’s ongoing success.

As a prominent fixture on the summer calendar across the province, the Soweto Kota Festival is hailed as the township’s premier festival and a key driver of its economic growth.

Tshingilane revealed exciting updates for this year’s festival, including the addition of new Kota vendors, diverse flavours, and the inclusion of halal products for the first time. The ongoing goal is to elevate the quality of kotas and enhance the festival experience.

Known for its ability to bring families together through music, food, and entertainment, the festival will feature an impressive lineup. Day one will honour Generation Z with a lively performance by Sir Trill, while day two will provide a soulful RNB Sunday, headlined by gospel artist Thina Zungu.

Tshingilane highlighted plans to expand the kiddies section to embrace the digital era, ensuring a well-rounded experience for all attendees.

Thompson Meats, a new festival sponsor, is committed to delivering quality and goodness to consumers and vendors alike. The Durban-based company’s partnership with the event is a notable step for a business established in 1960.

Khosi Zikalala of the Soweto Tourism Association praised the festival as a pivotal initiative for township development and the promotion of local culture. The event contributes to domestic tourism and offers local job opportunities, and the association pledges to actively promote and support the festival to attract visitors to Soweto.
