Why Prosecco Mint Julep is the perfect springtime sip

Published

on

There’s something undeniably refreshing about sipping a cool, crisp cocktail while enjoying the blooming beauty of spring. The season calls for light, vibrant flavours that capture the essence of renewal and growth. Enter the Prosecco Mint Julep – a sparkling twist on a classic favourite that’s perfectly suited for springtime gatherings, garden parties, or Friday sundowners on the patio.

Prosecco has quickly become famous in the world of sparkling wines, known for its crisp, fruity notes and versatility. Unlike its French counterpart, Champagne, Prosecco is typically more affordable and has a slightly sweeter profile, making it an excellent choice for mixing in cocktails. The subtle sweetness and bubbles of Prosecco lighten the bourbon’s boldness, making the drink smoother and more refreshing.

Ingredients

  • 50 ml bourbon
  • 25 ml simple syrup (see note below)
  • 8-10 fresh mint leaves, plus extra for garnish
  • Crushed ice
  • 60-90 ml Prosecco
  • Mint sprig and lemon twist for garnish

Method

  1. To make simple syrup, combine equal parts sugar and water in a small saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves completely. Let it cool before using. You can also infuse your simple syrup with mint by adding a few mint leaves while it cools, then straining them out.
  2. In a mixing glass or directly in your serving cup, gently muddle the fresh mint leaves with the simple syrup. The goal is to release the mint’s essential oils without tearing the leaves, which could add bitterness to the drink.
  3. Pour the bourbon into the glass with the muddled mint and simple syrup. Stir to combine.
  4. Fill your cup generously with crushed ice.
  5. Slowly pour the Prosecco over the ice, filling the glass to the top. Give the drink a gentle stir to mix everything together.
  6. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint and a twist of lemon.
