World Porridge Day Celebrates the Nourishing Dish

Every year, on 10 October, the world comes together to celebrate the humble yet powerful dish known as porridge. With its nourishing qualities and comforting warmth, porridge has been a staple food in cultures around the globe for centuries.

Mielie Pap: A Popular South African Porridge

In South Africa, one of the most popular forms of porridge is mielie pap, made from maize meal. Mielie pap can be enjoyed in various consistencies, including soft and smooth for breakfast, or firmer and thicker for lunch or dinner.

Quick and Easy Preparation with Instant Pot

Traditionally, making mielie meal porridge on the stove can take 30 minutes to over an hour, requiring continuous stirring and monitoring. However, with the use of an Instant Pot, preparing mielie pap becomes quick and effortless. There is no need for constant stirring or monitoring, and the Delay Start function allows for convenient preparation ahead of time.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup mielie meal
  • 2-2.25 cups of boiling water (adjust based on desired consistency)
  • 1 cup of water for cooking
  • Butter and other flavorings to taste

Method

  1. Place the trivet in the Instant Pot with 1 cup of water. Place an oven-safe bowl or pot with the mielie pap and boiling water on the trivet.
  2. Use the Porridge preset for 15-20 minutes, depending on the desired consistency. Perform a natural pressure release once cooking is complete.
  3. Utilize the Delay Start feature the night before to have the porridge ready in the morning. Consider the time required for the pot to pressurize when setting the timing.
  4. After cooking, add butter and any additional flavorings as per preference.
