Introducing the Citrus Mint Mojito

Published

on

Mojito hails from Cuba, where it was born in the 16th century. Originally known as “El Draque” – named after the English sea captain and pirate Sir Francis Drake – the drink was a simple concoction of aguardiente (a precursor to rum), lime, sugar, and mint.

It was used medicinally to combat dysentery and scurvy among sailors. By the 19th century, rum had replaced aguardiente, and the drink evolved into the mojito we know today.

The Citrus Mint Mojito takes the classic Mojito recipe and infuses it with the tangy flavours of various winter citrus fruits.

Beyond its delightful taste, the Citrus Mint Mojito offers some potential health benefits. Citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C, an essential nutrient that supports the immune system, aids in collagen production, and acts as a powerful antioxidant.

Ingredients

  • 50 ml of white rum
  • 25 ml of fresh lime juice
  • 15 ml of fresh lemon juice
  • 15 ml of fresh orange juice
  • 15 ml of simple syrup
  • 10 fresh mint leaves, plus extra for garnish
  • Soda water
  • Citrus slices (lime, lemon, and orange) for garnish
  • Ice cubes

Method

  1. Place the mint leaves at the bottom of a sturdy glass. Add the simple syrup and gently muddle the mint leaves with a muddler or the back of a spoon. The goal is to release the essential oils from the mint without tearing the leaves apart, which can result in a bitter taste.
  2. Pour in the fresh lime, lemon, and orange juice.
  3. Add the white rum to the mixture.
  4. Fill the glass with ice cubes and stir the mixture well. For a more integrated flavour, you can transfer the mixture to a cocktail shaker, shake it briefly, and then pour it back into the glass.
  5. Top off the cocktail with club soda to add a refreshing effervescence. Stir gently to combine.
  6. Garnish with slices of lime, lemon, and orange and a sprig of fresh mint.

Variations

One of the joys of mixology is experimentation. While the Citrus Mint Mojito is delightful as is, feel free to explore variations. For a sweeter twist, try adding a splash of grenadine. If you prefer a more herbaceous note, consider incorporating basil alongside the mint. And for those who enjoy a bit of heat, a few slices of jalapeño can add a spicy kick to the drink.
