Tyla Clears the Air on Coachella Look After Britney Spears Comparisons: “It Wasn’t That Deep”

South African pop sensation and Grammy winner Tyla lit up the Coachella stage with a head-turning outfit — and the internet had thoughts. But while fans and fashion commentators rushed to label her look a “Britney Spears throwback,” Tyla had a very different take: “Love her, but I just thought the outfit was fly.”

Let’s break it down.

Tyla’s Coachella fit? A vibrant green and purple bra top paired with ultra-low-rise bedazzled jean shorts complete with tassels. She finished the look with a sparkling body chain and two show-stopping footwear moments: zebra-print Dolce & Gabbana booties and tall brown knee-highs. It was bold, vibrant, and undeniably Tyla.

But fans were quick to connect the dots, seeing echoes of Britney Spears’ iconic 2001 VMAs performance of “I’m a Slave 4 U.” That moment — complete with jungle-toned bra, hip-hugging shorts, and a live snake — defined a generation of stage glam. So when Tyla’s Coachella moment hit social media, comparisons came in fast and furious.

Tyla, however, wasn’t here for the narrative.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), she shut the chatter down:
“Love her, but I just thought the outfit was fly. No inspo.”

Short, sweet, and straight to the point.

Not everyone took it well. One Britney fan accused Tyla of being a “copycat,” prompting Tyla to clap back in the most Tyla way possible:
“Personally, I think you should shut the f*ck up.”

That reply did more than end the conversation — it set the tone. Tyla wasn’t here to debate her originality or explain her creative choices.

While some Britney fans were offended, others on X defended Tyla, pointing out that besides the general jungle vibe, the looks were worlds apart.

“If she was inspired by Britney, we all know she would’ve done it better anyway,” wrote one user.
“Her outfit is a cute summer moment — and very Tyla.”

Others brought up a valid cultural point:

“Britney is not big in Africa. Most people know her name, maybe a song or two. But Tyla speaks to a different generation and a different audience. Africans gravitate toward Black artists most of the time. That’s why we believe Tyla.”

Tyla’s fashion moment — and the way she owned the conversation — shows exactly why she’s one of the most watched artists of her generation. She’s unapologetically herself, even when comparisons come with the territory.

So, was it Britney-inspired? Nope. It was just Tyla being Tyla.
