The 2025 State of the Nation Address (SONA) red carpet saw a stunning display of fashion as politicians, celebrities, and other notable figures descended upon Parliament in Cape Town. From bold emerald greens to striking gold accents, the evening was filled with high fashion and cultural statements that highlighted the importance of style at this prestigious event.

A Green Wave: Emerald as the Colour of 2025

Chief Justice Mandisa Maya led the charge in the emerald green trend, stepping out in a sophisticated green outfit that was bold yet refined. Complemented by a pearly necklace, classic black shoes, and a handbag, Maya’s look was understated but undeniably classy, making a quiet yet powerful statement.

Emerald green was not just a favourite of Maya. Advocate Shameemah Salie MP from the Al Jama-ah party embraced the shade with an ensemble that reflected both Muslim traditional attire and the colours of the Palestinian flag. Accompanied by her son, Yaseen Salie, their outfits made a strong, subtle statement of solidarity with Gaza.

Joining the green movement was Welekazi Sibiya, a City Council Member for the Democratic Alliance, who stunned in a chic ball gown-inspired dress. The simple, figure-hugging gown highlighted the elegance of less being more—a classic example of how sophistication doesn’t need to be loud to make an impact.

Standout Statements Beyond the Green

Among the standout looks, Nomvula Mokonyane, Deputy Secretary General of the African National Congress, made waves with her bold figure-hugging pinstripe dress by actress and designer Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa’s Essie Apparel. The outfit accentuated her curves, embodying the night’s theme of bold, confident statements.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, sported an olive green look complemented with black and white beads—a nod to understated elegance. But could this subtle colour choice hint at something deeper, perhaps a political undertone that didn’t escape notice?

Culture and Tradition Take the Stage

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party made a bold choice, arriving in uniform that made them look more like soldiers than political figures. In contrast, Patricia de Lille, Minister of Tourism and leader of the Good Party, played it safe with a look that resembled her party’s flag—a simple but effective choice.

Perhaps one of the more unexpected arrivals was the former Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie. His outfit, more suited for a VIP protection officer, left some wondering if his friend Kenny Kunene could have done more to dress him in something more fashion-forward.

Celebrities and Icons Make Their Mark

Celebrities like Zoalize Jansen van Rensburg, Miss World SA 2024, graced the red carpet with an elegant Princess Diaries-inspired coat dress by Casper Bosman. The white dress exuded grace and sophistication, a perfect match for her poised presence.

Then, there was the ever-iconic Gezani Eric Kobane, aka Papa Penny, whose bold statement look featured a blue and gold suit paired with gold shoes. His outfit, complemented by his signature “bolla” hairstyle, ensured that all eyes were on him.

Adding another layer of class was former President Kgalema Motlanthe and his wife, Gugu Mtshali. Gugu’s sky-blue ensemble with a touch of bling from a brooch contrasted Motlanthe’s classic black suit. The couple opted for a polished, more understated look, exuding professionalism without trying to steal the spotlight.

A Year for Renewal and Balance

Why emerald green in 2025? Emerald green symbolizes renewal, prosperity, and balance—all themes that resonate with the hopeful, forward-looking spirit of the SONA. In a post-pandemic world that values sustainability and fresh starts, this colour offered a perfect blend of sophistication and optimism. The year 2025, with its promises of progress and unity, was reflected perfectly in the emerald hues that dominated the night.
