Disney’s live-action Snow White has become one of the most controversial releases in recent years, with audiences divided over the film’s casting, themes, and changes to the classic fairytale. The backlash intensified following past comments by lead actress Rachel Zegler, which resurfaced ahead of the film’s release.

In 2022, Zegler admitted that she was afraid of the original 1937 Snow White and only watched it once as a child. She also criticized the classic love story, claiming that the prince “literally stalks” Snow White. These remarks fueled concerns that the remake would radically alter the beloved story. While Zegler later clarified her statements, saying they were taken out of context, fans remained unconvinced.

Many took to social media to express their disappointment, accusing Disney of pushing a “woke” agenda. Some criticized the removal of the iconic song Someday My Prince Will Come, while others questioned whether Gal Gadot’s Evil Queen could believably envy Zegler’s Snow White. One user wrote, “They’ve turned Snow White, which represents innocence, into a DEI narrative that promotes darkness and evil.”

Others mocked the film’s casting, arguing that Zegler’s portrayal lacked authenticity. “She’s no Snow White, and yes, her attitude sucks,” one critic said, while another added, “The Queen is supposed to be the most beautiful woman in the kingdom—how is she jealous of Snow White?”

The controversy appears to have impacted the film’s box office performance. Snow White made just $3.5 million(R63 659 396,85) in Thursday previews and is projected to earn a disappointing $45–$55 million(R818 495 973,00-R1 000 383 967,00) in its opening weekend—well below expectations for a $270 million(R4 910 867 757,00) Disney film. With negative reviews and underwhelming ticket sales, the remake is shaping up to be one of Disney’s biggest misfires in recent years.
