Rachel Kolisi recently joined Mpoomy Ledwaba on the “Wisdom and Wellness” podcast to discuss how helping others has transformed her life. The podcast, in collaboration with The Earthshot Prize, celebrates women making a positive impact in sustainability.

In the first episode of this partnership, Ledwaba and Rachel engaged in a meaningful conversation about Rachel’s dedication to addressing food insecurity and the significant work of the Siya Kolisi Foundation. Founded by Rachel and her former husband, ex-Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, the foundation has made an impactful difference. However, before the episode aired, Rachel announced her departure from the foundation.

Reflecting on her youth, Rachel shared a pivotal moment that sparked her passion for helping others. “Growing up in South Africa, none of us can escape seeing the poverty and struggles faced by many communities. It always made me uncomfortable—having so much privilege while so many had so little. That discomfort stayed with me, and I realized I had to make a change,” she explained.

Rachel emphasized that addressing poverty is not just the government’s responsibility but a collective duty for all. “Taking on this responsibility is an honor for me. It’s challenging, exhausting, and often frustrating, but it’s deeply enlightening and reveals what it truly means to grow up and live in South Africa.”

The conversation then shifted to Rachel’s partnership with Siya as they discussed their shared vision for transformation within their community. Rachel recalled a conversation with Siya before the 2019 World Cup final, where they made plans to bring about change in South Africa, regardless of the result. “Success comes with responsibility, and we wanted to make a difference. The day after the victory, we felt the weight of that responsibility and knew we had to follow through,” she said.
