Drama Series “Pound 4 Pound” Faces Legal and Financial Controversies
The production company behind the BET drama series Pound 4 Pound has come under scrutiny for shooting scenes in downtown Johannesburg without the necessary permits. Allegations of connections within the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) to bypass city bylaws have added further controversy to the beleaguered production.
Sources claim that Bakwena Production, led by Rashaka Muofhe and actor Kagiso Medupe, filmed scenes on a busy two-way street near the Franklin Hotel in September 2024 without securing a special permit.
An insider revealed, “Rashaka assured us everything was fine because of his ‘connections.’ He called a senior official at JMPD, and soon after, officers arrived to close the street for the shoot.” The source added that the police presence made the shoot appear legitimate, despite the absence of a permit.
When asked about the incident, JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed that filming on public roads requires a permit but declined to comment on whether Pound 4 Pound had one.
Financial Struggles for Cast and Crew
Beyond the legal issues, Pound 4 Pound has left many of its cast, crew, and suppliers unpaid. This financial mismanagement has caused severe hardship:
- Actor Brandon Auret reportedly sold his car to cover living expenses.
- Other cast and crew members face eviction and mounting debt.
- Suppliers and even a guesthouse used during production have not received payments.
A member of the production team shared, “They’ve exploited us, knowing their connections protect them. They’re not even taking our calls.”
Adding to the controversy, Muofhe’s father is reportedly a prominent politician in South Africa, leading to suspicions about his influence on the production’s ability to bypass legal requirements.
Despite multiple attempts, Muofhe and Medupe have not responded to requests for comment. As financial and legal challenges mount, the case of Pound 4 Pound highlights the need for accountability in South Africa’s entertainment industry.
