A 1.2-meter Mozambique spitting cobra caused alarm at the Kruger National Park after it was discovered inside a toilet at the Masorini Picnic site. The incident, which unfolded on February 2, required expert intervention as the venomous snake disappeared into the plumbing system.

The sighting was first reported to a ranger stationed at the Phalaborwa gate, who immediately contacted snake specialists for assistance. According to a statement from South African National Parks (SANParks), the ranger wasted no time in reaching out to the Phalaborwa Snake Club, whose members were nearby at Sable Dam.

Upon arrival, the snake experts confirmed that the reptile was a Mozambique spitting cobra, a highly venomous species known for its ability to spray venom at potential threats. However, by the time they arrived, the snake had already retreated deep into the toilet pipes, making its retrieval significantly more challenging.

To locate the elusive reptile, the snake handlers used a portable endoscopy camera, a device that allowed them to see inside the narrow plumbing system. The team then carefully dismantled parts of the toilet to access the snake safely.

After a delicate operation, they successfully removed the cobra unharmed and released it back into its natural habitat away from human activity.

The discovery serves as a reminder of the heightened snake activity during the hot summer months. As temperatures rise, reptiles often seek out cooler, shaded areas, sometimes leading them into unexpected places.

SANParks has urged visitors to remain vigilant and be cautious of their surroundings to avoid unexpected wildlife encounters in both urban and natural settings.
