Liam Payne’s cause of Death confirmed as Polytrauma

The tragic death of Liam Payne, former One Direction member, has been confirmed by a UK inquest as due to polytrauma—multiple traumatic injuries to the body and organs. Payne, 31, died in October 2024 after falling from a third-floor balcony at the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

During a hearing at Buckinghamshire Coroner’s Court on December 17, Senior Coroner Crispin Butler stated that investigations in Argentina are ongoing, and it may take considerable time to gather all necessary information. The coroner noted that addressing the circumstances of Payne’s death requires cooperation through the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office.

The inquest has been adjourned until November 6, 2025, when a pre-inquest review will be conducted.

Following months of investigation, five individuals have been charged in connection with Payne’s death:

• The hotel manager, reception head, and Payne’s manager face negligent homicide charges, carrying a maximum penalty of five years in prison.
• A hotel employee and a local waiter are charged with supplying drugs to Payne, offenses that could result in up to 15 years in prison.

Judge’s Findings

Argentinian Judge Laura Bruniard concluded that Payne’s fatal fall occurred after he attempted to climb over his balcony. Her ruling highlights several failures in duty of care:

• Payne, who was under the influence of alcohol and other substances, was visibly unwell in the hotel lobby.
• Instead of being kept in a secure area with supervision, Payne was dragged to his room by staff members.
• Access to the balcony, combined with his altered state, created a high-risk environment.

Judge Bruniard stated that Payne should have been left in a safe place and monitored until medical help arrived.

Payne’s family has expressed their heartbreak over the tragedy, but they remain hopeful as the legal proceedings move forward. A family friend told The Sun: “After a horrific couple of months, there is a feeling like justice could finally be possible.”
