Joburg Open Gains a New Date on the Global Golf Calendar

The Joburg Open will now take place from 6–9 March 2025, a shift from its previous November slot. This 17th edition of the tournament is part of the DP World Tour’s International Swing. Hosted at the esteemed Houghton Golf Club, the Joburg Open features a prize fund of €1 million (about R23 million).

As the last co-sanctioned event of the Sunshine Tour season, the Joburg Open offers golfers a vital chance to earn points and increase their global standings. South African players have a strong history in the event, having won 10 of the 16 past tournaments.

Joburg Ladies Open: New Opportunities for Women in Golf

The Joburg Ladies Open returns to Modderfontein Golf Club from 3–6 April 2025. With a prize purse of €300,000 (around R6.8 million), this event will feature players from both the Sunshine Ladies Tour and the Ladies European Tour.

The city aims to support women’s sports through this tournament. The event provides an international platform for South African women golfers and promotes Johannesburg’s leading courses as ideal venues.

Driving Tourism and Economic Growth in Johannesburg

The City of Johannesburg views these tournaments as valuable tools for tourism growth. Executive Mayor Cllr Dada Morero emphasized this point, saying, “The Joburg Open and Joburg Ladies Open help to grow our sports tourism industry and showcase Johannesburg’s attractions.”

The tournaments will draw fans to two of the city’s top golf courses, Houghton Golf Club and Modderfontein Golf Club. Their return boosts tourism and brings local businesses new opportunities.

Thomas Abt, Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour, shared his excitement for the Joburg Open’s new position. “The Joburg Open has always created pathways for our players. South African golfers have a proud history in this tournament, and we look forward to the future,” he said.

Ben Cowen, Chief Tournament & Operations Officer for DP World Tour, also emphasized the Joburg Open’s impact on South African golf. “This tournament provides essential opportunities and supports growth in the sport. We’re proud to back this event as it joins the 2025 Race to Dubai.”
