Elon Musk’s Strained Relationship with Father Errol Musk

Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and a central figure in technology and politics, is known for his influential relationships, including his direct access to US President Donald Trump. However, one of the most complicated relationships in Musk’s life is with his father, Errol Musk, who resides in Cape Town, South Africa.

In a recent appearance on Joshua Rubin’s Wide Awake Podcast, Errol Musk opened up about the rift between him and his famous son, suggesting that it stems from controversial personal decisions. The 79-year-old father claimed that his strained relationship with Elon is partly due to the fact that he had children with his stepdaughter, a revelation that has seemingly created a divide in their family dynamics.

Despite the personal tensions, Errol Musk highlighted his role in providing a lavish lifestyle for his children, boasting about the wealth he amassed. According to him, the family lived in palatial homes with numerous servants catering to their every need, offering Elon and his siblings a childhood many would envy. However, this version of their upbringing contrasts sharply with the narrative often portrayed by Elon.

When questioned about Elon’s experience with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Errol Musk downplayed any concerns. He recalled his son’s intense focus, pointing out that Elon, despite not being diagnosed with Asperger’s until later in life, had a drive and dedication similar to that of his brother. Errol Musk noted that while Elon’s childhood was filled with wealth and luxury, other children likely felt disadvantaged by comparison, given their modest circumstances.

The World Health Organization defines ASD as a spectrum of conditions that affect communication and social interaction. People with ASD can experience a wide range of challenges, but many lead independent lives, while others require lifelong care and support. Despite his own ASD diagnosis, Elon Musk has become a vocal critic of the US government’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, which support individuals with disabilities and mental health conditions.

Recently, Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) announced plans to cut all DEI services, with a White House representative asserting that the initiative would eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse, with DEI seen as part of the problem.

Elon Musk’s father also disputed claims made by his son regarding his childhood in South Africa, suggesting that Elon’s narrative of a difficult upbringing was exaggerated. According to Errol, Elon sought sympathy by painting a bleak picture of his early years, which Errol insists were far from grim.

Reflecting on Elon’s adolescence, Errol Musk recalled that his son struggled with relationships, particularly with girls. In one instance, Elon invited a girl to the movies, but his father was called after the event to find out that the girl had left him behind at the cinema, a moment Errol claims showcases Elon’s ongoing struggles with social connections during his teenage years.
