South Africa is in mourning following the death of celebrated actor Don Mlangeni Nawa at the age of 65. The industry icon, whose memorable roles touched generations, was remembered by his family in a heartfelt tribute on Wednesday.

Known for his commanding screen presence and deep connection to his craft, Nawa’s passing was announced by his loved ones, who requested privacy as they grieve the loss of a cherished father and national treasure.

“It is with deep heartbreak that we share the passing of our beloved father, Don Mlangeni Nawa.

“He was the heart of our family – a loving father, brother and friend. To the world, he was a gifted and respected actor whose presence lit up every stage and screen he graced,” the family said in a statement.

The cause of death has not been made public, and funeral details will be shared in due course.

Tributes from across the country have flooded social media, with fans and celebrities honouring Nawa’s legacy. ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula praised his ability to tell South African stories with authenticity and emotional depth.

Nawa’s television journey began in the 1980s, but it was his portrayal of Bra Zeb Matabane in Isidingo from 1998 to 2014 that cemented his place in the hearts of viewers. He was also well-loved for his role as Laqhasha in the classic sitcom ’Sgudi ’Snaysi.

In recent years, he continued captivating audiences with appearances in Shaka iLembe, The River, and the film Losing Lerato, demonstrating his enduring versatility and commitment to the craft.
