Charlize Theron and Thabo Rametsi Collaborate on Imbokodo Comic Series Celebrating African Warrior Women
Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron joins forces with South African creatives Thabo Rametsi and Thabiso Mabanna to launch Imbokodo, a groundbreaking comic series centered on African female warriors. Backed by Theron’s venture Secret Menu and Rametsi’s Nguniverse Studios, Imbokodo aims to bring powerful, historic African figures such as Nzinga, Nandi, and Modjadji into a new, Afrofuturistic narrative. The project also collaborates with illustrator Katlego Motaung and logo artist Gil Lazcano, underlining its deep African cultural roots.
Theron highlighted the comic’s powerful storytelling, noting how the series amplifies the resilience and strength of Africa’s warrior women. “We knew we found a perfect home in Dark Horse,” Theron said, referring to the series’ publisher and their shared commitment to highlighting diverse perspectives in the comic world.
Rametsi, known for roles in Kalushi and Silverton Siege, expressed excitement about Imbokodo, describing it as a celebration of Africa’s legacy. “Bringing African warrior women to the forefront of this narrative is an ode to African heritage,” he said. With the first installment already available in local comic shops, Imbokodo premiered with high acclaim at Comic Con Africa. Following issues are set to release in February, April, and June 2024, promising fans a dynamic exploration of African mythology with a global reach.
