In a groundbreaking moment for the fashion industry, 21-year-old US model Alex Consani was named Model of the Year at the British Fashion Council’s prestigious Fashion Awards on December 2, 2024. This makes Consani the first openly transgender person to receive the honor, a historic achievement that has sparked both celebration and controversy.

Receiving the award at London’s Royal Albert Hall, Consani used the moment to pay tribute to those who paved the way for her success, particularly black trans women. “I’m the first trans woman to win this award. But I can’t accept this award without thanking those who came before me,” she said. “Specifically, the black trans women who really fought for the space I’m in today … Dominique Jackson, Connie Fleming, and Aaron Rose Philip were among those who fought for the space that allowed me to flourish.”

Consani’s win comes just months after she made history as one of the first openly trans models to walk in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show alongside Brazilian model Valentina Sampaio.

However, her win has triggered a backlash from some who oppose trans rights. Comments flooded social media, with detractors criticizing the decision. One person on X (formerly Twitter) questioned, “What’s that dude doing wearing a dress?” Another commenter accused the fashion industry of “genuine hatred for women on insurmountable levels,” while others claimed that a cisgender model should have won instead.

Despite the backlash, Consani’s win underscores the growing visibility and acceptance of transgender individuals in mainstream fashion, reflecting broader societal changes towards inclusivity and diversity.
