Vodacom Unveils Digital Water Tower to Tackle Gauteng’s Water Crisis

As Gauteng faces an escalating water crisis, Vodacom Business has introduced the Digital Water Tower, a technology-driven solution aimed at reducing water losses and optimising supply efficiency.
The solution, developed in partnership with the Strategic Water Partners Network (SWPN), integrates geospatial data and demand management analytics to help municipalities, suppliers, and consumers better manage water resources.
Gauteng’s Water Crisis: A Growing Concern
Despite recent heavy rains filling the Vaal Dam, water shortages persist across Johannesburg and surrounding areas. Gauteng’s water crisis is exacerbated by:
-
Infrastructure failures and ageing pipes
-
Theft and inefficiencies, resulting in nearly 40% of water being lost
-
Delays in the Lesotho Highlands Water Project
-
Increasing demand surpassing supply limits
With supply constraints expected until at least 2029, urgent interventions are needed to prevent further disruptions.
How Vodacom’s Digital Water Tower Works
Vodacom Business, in collaboration with Mezzanine, developed the Digital Water Tower to enhance water monitoring and management. The platform:
-
Uses real-time data to track water distribution
-
Identifies inefficiencies and leaks in supply networks
-
Enhances collaboration between municipalities, suppliers, and consumers
-
Supports data-driven decision-making for better resource allocation
“Our commitment to digital transformation extends beyond connectivity – we believe in using our technology capabilities to drive sustainable impact,” says Videsha Proothveerajh, director of Vodacom Business.
Phased Rollout and Implementation
The rollout of the Digital Water Tower is planned in two phases:
-
Phase One: Data collection and analysis, including water meter readings and consumer usage reports
-
Phase Two: Impact assessments, prioritisation of interventions, and improvements in consumer and supplier services
The initiative is also aligned with the Platform for a Water Secure Gauteng (PWSG), ensuring a collaborative approach to long-term water sustainability.
A Step Toward Water Security
With water shortages worsening, innovative solutions like Vodacom’s Digital Water Tower could play a vital role in addressing supply challenges. By leveraging technology and data analytics, this initiative aims to reduce wastage, improve efficiency, and support long-term water security for Gauteng residents.
