Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest city and a bustling economic hub, is grappling with declining municipal service delivery. In response, the City of Johannesburg has launched the Smart City Community Innovation Challenge and Awards 2024, offering R1.1 million in funding for fresh, innovative ideas aimed at addressing these challenges.
As the city faces deteriorating infrastructure and services, despite being home to major corporations and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the initiative seeks to inspire residents to take an active role in modernizing service delivery. By inviting individuals, teams, and local organizations to participate, the city aims to foster collaborative problem-solving that benefits the entire community.
Running from October 7 to November 29, 2024, this challenge encourages participants to submit ideas that address everyday issues affecting residents. The focus is on practical, scalable solutions that can significantly improve municipal services and community well-being.
Participants will compete in three award categories, with funding for pilot projects as follows:
Submissions will be evaluated on several key criteria, including:
Finalists will also receive support from local experts to refine their ideas, and the public will have the chance to vote via the City’s social media platforms.
“This is more than just an awards event — it’s about reimagining urban management in Johannesburg,” said Nelson Sekgota, Project Manager at Wits University’s Tshimologong Precinct. The city hopes the challenge will create lasting partnerships between residents and the municipality, driving sustainable economic development and improving the quality of life for all.
Mayor Dada Morero echoed this sentiment, stating, “Winning ideas will not only receive recognition but will be piloted to enhance specific areas of service delivery in our city.”
Interested individuals or teams can visit the City of Johannesburg’s website to register and submit their entries before the November 29, 2024 deadline. For more information, visit www.joburg.org.za and take the first step toward making a difference in your community.
