India-Linked Firms Join Forces to Tackle South Africa’s Water and Energy Crisis

Two South African companies with strong ties to India have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to help alleviate the country’s water and energy crisis.

Imbanita Consulting and Engineering Services, a joint venture between Imbani Holdings and Tata Africa, and Ion Exchange Safic, a subsidiary of India’s Ion Exchange, formalized their partnership at the Indian Consulate in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

Tackling Load-Shedding & Water Shortages

Bish Chakraborty, CEO of Imbanita, stated that his company is well-positioned to assist in reducing load-shedding, which has crippled South Africa’s economy in recent years. Load-shedding has disrupted businesses, households, and industries, making power generation a national priority.

Meanwhile, Gourish Chakravorty, CEO of Ion Exchange Safic, emphasized that his firm has been working on South Africa’s water challenges for 17 years, with its Indian parent company bringing 40 years of expertise in water and environmental management solutions.

India’s Success Story as a Model for South Africa

Chakravorty highlighted the lessons South Africa could learn from India, which faced similar power and water shortages three decades ago. Thanks to strategic interventions, India now enjoys widespread access to electricity and clean water—a model that South Africa could replicate.

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

Indian Consul General Mahesh Kumar praised the initiative, linking it to the Matla-Urja energy conference, which his office hosted last year.

“Water and power are twin challenges to economic growth. Teaming up to help South Africans benefit from Indian expertise is a very welcome move,” said Kumar.

The partnership between Imbanita Consulting and Ion Exchange Safic represents a significant step in addressing South Africa’s energy and water crises. With proven expertise from India and local implementation in South Africa, the collaboration aims to provide sustainable solutions for the country’s most pressing infrastructure challenges.
