In a bold move toward a greener future, President Cyril Ramaphosa has revealed that South African car buyers may soon benefit from electric car incentives aimed at promoting the purchase of electric and hybrid vehicles. This announcement came during the SA Auto Week in Cape Town, hosted by Naamsa – The Automotive Business Council.

Ramaphosa emphasized that while the global transition to decarbonisation presents significant challenges to the automotive sector, it also opens up immense opportunities for growth and innovation. With countries worldwide shifting toward environmentally friendly transportation, South Africa needs to act fast to remain competitive in the global automotive market.

Government Incentives for Electric Vehicles

The South African government is actively finalizing New Energy Vehicle (NEV) policy guidelines, which include subsidies and tax rebates to encourage local car buyers to purchase electric vehicles (EVs). This step marks a significant shift from the government’s earlier focus, outlined in the EV White Paper of December 2023, which prioritized securing manufacturing and export contracts for local Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).

“We are committed to working closely with the private sector to promote the production of New Energy Vehicles and to develop the necessary infrastructure to support them,” Ramaphosa said at the event.

Boosting Local NEV Manufacturing

In addition to consumer-focused subsidies, the government is exploring incentives for manufacturers to produce electric and hybrid vehicles locally. This move is vital as the automotive sector accounts for about 15% of South Africa’s total exports, making it a critical player in the country’s economic growth.

Despite ongoing load-shedding challenges, which previously slowed South Africa’s EV transition, Ramaphosa reiterated that improving the country’s energy, freight, and logistics sectors remains a priority. This infrastructure development is essential to supporting the rise of New Energy Vehicles in the local market.

The Future of South Africa’s Automotive Industry

President Ramaphosa’s announcement signals a pivotal moment for the South African automotive industry. The introduction of electric car purchase incentives not only aligns with global environmental goals but also promises to position South Africa as a leader in the green energy automotive revolution.

South African consumers can look forward to benefiting from tax rebates and subsidies as the government finalizes its NEV policy. This initiative will pave the way for a more sustainable future while ensuring the country remains competitive in the ever-evolving global automotive landscape.
