Shoprite Foundation Invests Over R3 Million in Robotics Labs to Bridge South Africa’s Skills Gap

Published

on

The Shoprite Foundation has taken a major step towards addressing South Africa’s critical digital skills gap by investing over R3 million to establish two state-of-the-art robotics labs at Cingani High School and Soqhayisa Senior Secondary School in Motherwell, Eastern Cape. This initiative is designed to equip Grade 8 and 9 learners with essential skills in robotics, coding, mechanical design, and digital literacy, preparing them for a technology-driven job market.

Empowering Youth with Future-Ready Skills

The demand for AI, robotics, and machine learning specialists is rising globally. By introducing robotics education at the high school level, the Shoprite Foundation is creating opportunities for young South Africans to compete in a rapidly evolving digital economy.

“Technology has the ability to transform lives. By investing in technology education, the Shoprite Foundation is supporting a future where young people have the necessary skills and opportunities to succeed,” said Maude Modise, Managing Trustee of the Foundation.

Industry-Recognized Certifications for Learners

Students enrolled in the robotics lab curriculum will gain not only hands-on experience but also industry-recognized certifications that enhance their career prospects. These qualifications will help learners stand out when applying for higher education programs or entering the workforce.

Beyond technical skills, the robotics labs will nurture problem-solving abilities, analytical thinking, resilience, teamwork, and collaboration—all essential attributes for the future workplace.

Teacher Training to Ensure Long-Term Impact

To maximize the impact of these labs, 25 teachers from Cingani and Soqhayisa schools have undergone intensive robotics and coding training. Their training combined theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on projects, enabling them to teach effectively.

“Watching young learners experiment with robotics and master practical, future-oriented skills is one of the most rewarding aspects of our work at the Shoprite Foundation,” added Modise.

Expanding Robotics Education Across South Africa

The launch of the Motherwell robotics labs, in partnership with Sifiso EdTech, follows the successful rollout of two robotics labs in KwaZulu-Natal in January 2024. These labs are now supporting thousands of high school learners, marking the beginning of a nationwide effort to expand access to technology education.

With the fourth industrial revolution shaping the global job market, initiatives like this are crucial in ensuring that South African learners remain competitive and prepared for future opportunities.

The Shoprite Foundation’s investment in robotics education is not just an investment in schools, but in the future of South Africa’s workforce and economy. By fostering early exposure to technology, this initiative is set to empower the next generation with the tools they need to thrive in a digitally driven world.
