Shoprite Checkers Replaces Pick n Pay in Strategic Expansion Across South Africa

Published

on

Shoprite Checkers is reshaping South Africa’s retail landscape by taking over numerous Pick n Pay stores, as the latter scales back operations amid financial challenges. This strategic shift underscores contrasting approaches by two of the country’s largest grocery chains, with Shoprite Checkers aggressively expanding while Pick n Pay tightens its operations.

Pick n Pay’s Challenges and Store Closures

Pick n Pay has been struggling to turn around its financial performance, prompting significant store closures. Under CEO Sean Summers’ “back-to-basics” strategy, 112 stores were targeted for closure or conversion into Boxer outlets.

By August 2024, over 54 stores, including franchise and corporate-owned locations, had shut down. Shopping mall owners like Redefine Properties also scaled back their leases with Pick n Pay, reclaiming significant retail space to attract higher-paying tenants.

Shoprite Checkers Steps In

The vacated retail spaces have opened the door for Shoprite Checkers to expand. In 2024 alone:

  • East Rand Expansion: Shoprite opened eight new supermarkets at former Pick n Pay locations, with seven branded as Checkers.
  • Liquor Business Acquisition: Shoprite acquired Pick n Pay Liquor Store operations owned by Van Riebeeck Park Foodlane.
  • New Supermarkets in Gauteng: By December 2024, Shoprite launched three additional stores at former Pick n Pay sites.

SA Corporate Real Estate Joins the Shift

SA Corporate Real Estate, a major property owner with over 150 assets across South Africa, has also pivoted away from Pick n Pay. With Pick n Pay contributing 9.2% of its rental revenue, the company announced a strategic leasing update:

  • Montana Crossing: A Checkers Emporium, featuring Fresh-X, Pet Science, and Liquor, will replace Pick n Pay in Q3 2025.
  • Springfield Value Centre: Pick n Pay QualiSave will be replaced by a Shoprite store in Q2 2025.
  • Coachman’s Crossing: The supermarket will give way to a bespoke butchery and deli.

Contrasting Strategies in South Africa’s Retail Sector

While Pick n Pay focuses on operational efficiency and consolidating its footprint, Shoprite Checkers is aggressively growing its retail presence. This divergence highlights the shifting dynamics in South Africa’s retail market, with Shoprite Checkers seizing opportunities to strengthen its dominance.

What Lies Ahead

As Shoprite Checkers continues its strategic expansion, it further solidifies its position as a leading retailer in South Africa. Meanwhile, Pick n Pay’s back-to-basics approach seeks to stabilize its financial performance amidst increasing competition.

This transformation in the retail sector will likely have lasting implications for shopping habits and mall dynamics, with Shoprite Checkers poised to take the lead in convenience-driven, customer-focused retailing.
