As South Africans celebrate National Pet Day, there’s even more reason for the country’s pet parents to cheer. The Shoprite Group, one of the nation’s largest retailers, has reported a remarkable 56.9% growth in Petshop Science sales during its interim financial period ending 29 December 2024.

This surge underscores the fast-growing demand for affordable, quality pet care as South Africa’s pet economy balloons to over R8 billion annually, supporting a population of more than 22 million pets.

Redefining Pet Retail

“Customers continue to vote with their feet and wallets,” said Willem Hunlun, Chief Operating Officer of the Shoprite Group. “There is no doubt that our unwavering commitment to value has been instrumental in the rapid growth of Petshop Science.”

The group identified a major opportunity in a market once dominated by veterinary stores and specialty pet retailers. With a mission to democratise pet care, Shoprite launched Petshop Science to offer premium, vet-approved products at supermarket prices.

Since launching its standalone pet stores in 2021, the brand has gained serious traction. In just the last half of 2024 alone, it opened 42 new outlets, bringing the total to 135 locations across all nine provinces.

Innovative Product Lines for Pet Parents

Petshop Science’s shelves are lined with top-tier pet brands like Hills, Montego, Dog’s Life, Eukanuba, Ultra Dog, Royal Canin, Rogz, and more. It also supports local small businesses like Maneli Pets, offering 100% natural treats under the Small Batch label.

To celebrate National Pet Day, Petshop Science unveiled new and exclusive offerings like the Sugacoat grooming range. This pet spa-style collection includes:

  • 2-in-1 Shampoo & Conditioner (250ml): Packed with Vitamin B5, Hydrolysed Collagen, and Vitamin E to cleanse and nourish.

  • Conditioning Mist (125ml): A light spray to smooth coats and ease brushing.

  • Perfume Mist (50ml): Alcohol-free and long-lasting scent for a fresh, cozy finish.

Treat Time for Dogs and Cats

National Pet Day also saw the launch of Montego’s new snacks to spoil fur babies:

  • Fruities: Fruity, yoghurt-infused treats in four flavour combos.

  • Chippies: Low-sodium dog treats perfect for all breeds.

  • Cosmic Kitty: Irresistible, nutritious cat snacks with space-age flavour combos.

More Than Retail: Insurance & Innovation

Shoprite became the first South African supermarket to offer pet insurance in 2020, solidifying its all-in-one approach to pet wellness. This end-to-end ecosystem—from insurance to grooming to nutrition—makes Petshop Science a one-stop destination for pet owners across income levels.

On Track to Lead the Pack

“Petshop Science is firmly on track to become South Africa’s biggest pet business,” Hunlun said, highlighting how value, variety, and convenience have redefined what pet care means in local communities.
