David Kan: The Visionary Who Transformed South Africa’s ICT Industry

Published

on

David Kan, a name synonymous with innovation and resilience in South Africa’s ICT industry, left an indelible mark on the country’s computing and technology landscape. As the founder of Mustek, one of South Africa’s oldest and most successful IT equipment distributors and assemblers, Kan’s journey from humble beginnings to industry titan is nothing short of inspiring.

From Humble Beginnings to ICT Pioneer

Born in Taipei, Taiwan, on 2 July 1959, David Chih-Hsing Kan grew up working various jobs, including dishwasher, truck driver, and waiter, to support himself. After completing his education and serving in the Taiwanese army, Kan moved to the United States, where he earned a BSc in mechanical engineering from Pittsburgh State University in Kansas.

In 1986, Kan arrived in South Africa, where his father served as an economic counsellor for the Taiwanese government. His first job was at a cutlery factory in Butterworth, Eastern Cape. However, a pivotal moment came in 1987 when Kan attended South Africa’s first PC exhibition at the Johannesburg Sun Hotel. There, he met Own Chen, the managing director of Taiwanese motherboard manufacturer Mustek Corporation.

The Birth of Mustek

Chen sought to establish a South African factory, and Kan convinced him that he was the man for the job. With a $50,000 loan from Chen and his father, Kan founded Mustek in South Africa. After two weeks of intensive training in Taiwan, Kan returned to South Africa to set up the company’s first assembly plant in Ga-Rankuwa, northwest of Pretoria.

Initially, Mustek assembled PCs for third-party brands like Teledex, Microbond, and Brother. However, Kan soon recognized the potential of creating an in-house brand. This led to the birth of Mecer, Mustek’s flagship brand, which became a household name in South Africa.

Seizing Opportunity Amid Sanctions

Kan’s timing was impeccable. During the Apartheid era, economic sanctions forced major PC brands to exit the South African market, creating a vacuum that Mecer quickly filled. By the time sanctions were lifted in the 1990s, Mecer had already established itself as a trusted brand, forcing international competitors to play catch-up.

“The global PC industry started to take off in 1987, and Taiwanese companies were the main hardware suppliers to the global market,” Kan once told MyBroadband. “Being Taiwanese, I certainly took a lot of advantages as a startup.”

Mustek’s Rise to Prominence

Mustek listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in 1997, marking a significant milestone in its growth journey. From its humble beginnings with $50,000 in capital, Mustek’s market capitalization soared to over R828 million by February 2024—a testament to Kan’s vision and leadership.

Under Kan’s guidance, Mustek became a cornerstone of South Africa’s ICT industry, supporting over 1,300 jobs and distributing a wide range of products, including desktops, laptops, tablets, and uninterrupted power supplies.

A Legacy of Humility and Hard Work

David Kan was known for his humility, work ethic, and hands-on approach. He avoided the limelight, often declining interviews and shying away from discussions about his success. “He was hardworking, honest, and respectful,” said Hein Engelbrecht, Kan’s successor as Mustek Group CEO. “He led by example and never interfered unnecessarily.”

Kan’s legacy extends beyond Mustek’s financial success. He inspired countless individuals in the ICT industry, emphasizing dedication and integrity. “Dedicate yourself to your work and lead by example,” Kan advised aspiring entrepreneurs.

Remembering David Kan

David Kan passed away in 2022 at the age of 62, leaving behind a legacy that continues to shape South Africa’s ICT industry. His story is a reminder of the power of perseverance, vision, and humility.

As we reflect on Kan’s contributions, it’s clear that his impact goes beyond Mustek and Mecer. He transformed South Africa’s ICT landscape, creating opportunities for thousands and setting a standard for excellence that endures to this day.
