Published

on

Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA) has partnered with Groundstone Farm and the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) to establish solar-powered community gardens in Limpopo. The initiative, launched in time for World Water Day on March 22, aims to enhance food and water sustainability in underserved areas.

Sustainable Farming for Limpopo Communities

The community gardens are being developed in Makhushaneng, Tshikota, and Ga Ramoshwana, areas that have benefited from CCBSA’s Coke Ville solar-powered boreholes. Key components of the project include:

  • Gardening equipment

  • Vegetable seeds and seedlings

  • Water infrastructure

  • Training workshops & mentorship

  • Off-taker agreements with retailers to create market access

Dr. Phokele Maponya from the ARC emphasized that the project aligns with the Water-Energy-Food nexus, ensuring long-term sustainability and empowering communities.

Empowering Local Farmers and Families

Mr. Dibesho Serage, Managing Director of Groundstone Farm, highlighted the self-sufficiency aspect:

“Access to clean water and food security are fundamental to community well-being. This partnership empowers communities with knowledge and skills that will foster self-sufficiency and create lasting impact.”

The initiative is already benefiting schools, creches, and informal market traders, helping families grow food for consumption while selling surplus for income.

Coca-Cola’s Commitment to Community Development

This project is part of CCBSA’s broader sustainability strategy, reinforcing its commitment to water stewardship and economic empowerment. As a Level 1 B-BBEE company, CCBSA continues to invest in ethical and inclusive business practices across South Africa.

With the success of these solar-powered gardens, more communities could soon benefit from similar initiatives, strengthening food security and economic resilience in South Africa.
