Chery’s Big Bet: 19 New Hybrid and Electric Vehicles to Hit South African Roads in 2025

Chinese car manufacturer Chery is taking bold steps in the South African automotive market by launching 19 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in 2025. The lineup includes an impressive mix of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and range-extender electric vehicles (REEVs), all designed to offer eco-conscious performance without sacrificing power.
The announcement comes on the heels of Chery’s unveiling at Auto Shanghai 2025, where the automaker launched its new Super Hybrid (CSH) brand. Three key models — the Tiggo 7 CSH, Tiggo 8 CSH, and the flagship Tiggo 9 CSH — are among the first set to hit South African showrooms later this year.
Chery’s Hybrid Evolution: From Research to Road
Chery’s journey in hybrid technology began as far back as 2001, long before hybrids became mainstream. Now, with over two decades of research and development, the company has built China’s fastest-growing hybrid segment and a diverse lineup of NEVs sold globally.
Chery Chairman Yin Tongyue says the strategy is rooted in four key goals: eco-friendliness, affordability, safety, and an extended driving range.
The next-generation CSH range is particularly impressive, boasting thermal efficiency of 46.5% — a record in hybrid engines — paired with a hybrid transmission offering up to 93% efficiency. Some models can achieve fuel consumption as low as 2 to 3 litres per 100 km, a compelling stat for fuel-conscious South African buyers.
Built for Performance and Versatility
The CSH lineup isn’t just about saving fuel — it’s also built for South Africa’s diverse driving conditions. The advanced 2.0 TGDI hybrid engine coupled with DHT230 and DHT280 transmissions delivers up to 280 kW of power and hybrid motor speeds reaching 24,000 rpm.
Chery also introduced several hybrid platforms aimed at various driving needs, including:
-
Super Hybrid Off-road Platform
-
Super Golden Extended-Range Platform
-
High-performance Electric Platform
-
Super Hybrid Platform
According to Jay Jay Botes, General Manager for Chery South Africa, “Advancing hybrid technology means harnessing innovation and new energy to drive sustainable growth and support a greener future.”
Chinese Automakers Expanding Their Footprint in SA
Chery’s aggressive push into South Africa comes as several other Chinese brands make their own mark.
BYD, the world’s largest auto employer, recently announced the launch of three new models — the SHARK 6 hybrid bakkie, SEALION 6 hybrid SUV, and SEALION 7 EV — expanding their local lineup to six vehicles.
Changan Automobile is also entering the market through a partnership with Jameel Motors, introducing both internal combustion and new energy vehicles later in 2025.
Even MG, the British-born but now Chinese-owned brand, made a return in January with three new models including the electric MG Cyberster sports car.
What This Means for South Africa
South Africa is becoming a focal point for new energy vehicle rollouts, and the arrival of Chery’s full hybrid and EV lineup solidifies the country’s importance in the global shift to sustainable mobility.
As more options become available — from affordable hybrids to performance-focused EVs — South African consumers are gaining access to world-class innovation at a time when fuel prices and environmental concerns are top of mind.
