South African Avi Lasarow Becomes London’s First Liveryman Entrepreneur

South African entrepreneur Avi Lasarow has made history by becoming the first South African Liveryman Entrepreneur in London.

At a prestigious ceremony in Drapers’ Hall, one of London’s most historic venues, Lasarow was among 41 founding members to be formally robed as a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Entrepreneurs.

This landmark event follows the Company of Entrepreneurs being granted full Worshipful Company status in 2024, officially recognising entrepreneurship as a professional discipline with civic and social value.

A South African Pioneer in the City of London

Lasarow, who has long been a trailblazer in business and diplomacy, expressed deep pride in this achievement:

“This isn’t just about ceremony. It’s about tradition, civic duty, and building a legacy that values both innovation and impact. To represent South Africa in this way is a true honour.”

His recognition was also celebrated by South African High Commissioner to the UK, Kingsley Mamabolo, who commended Lasarow’s role in uplifting South Africa’s presence abroad.

“It is always inspiring to see South Africans making meaningful contributions on the global stage.”

Who is Avi Lasarow?

Born in Johannesburg, Lasarow built his career in biotech and health-tech ventures.

He founded DNAFit, a pioneering company in genetics-based wellness solutions, which was later acquired by Prenetics, a global diagnostics leader. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he played a key role in large-scale testing and travel clearance systems across Europe.

Beyond business, Lasarow was appointed Honorary Consul for South Africa in the UK in 2011.

He continues to advocate for mentorship, digital transformation, and equitable health access, recently serving as a Special Advisor to the B20 Digital Transformation Task Force, focusing on Africa’s digital inclusion and cybersecurity.

What Does It Mean to Be a Liveryman?

Livery Companies date back to the 12th century, originating as trade guilds that set professional standards, trained apprentices, and contributed to public works.

Today, there are 111 active Livery Companies in London, each representing a professional discipline—from Drapers and Goldsmiths to Information Technologists and now, Entrepreneurs.

Becoming a Liveryman means:

Full membership in a prestigious civic institution
The right to vote in elections for the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs of London
A commitment to mentorship, public service, and business excellence

A Step Forward for South African Entrepreneurs

Lasarow’s achievement is a historic moment for South African entrepreneurs, proving that business leaders from the continent can shape global institutions.

His journey highlights the growing influence of South African talent in international business, innovation, and civic leadership.
