ANC reflects on Robben Island legacy amid efforts to rebuild

The African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa has emphasized the importance of unity and lessons from history as the party seeks to rebuild after its historic loss in the 2024 elections. This marked the ANC’s first failure to secure a majority, leading to the formation of a Government of National Unity (GNU).

Rebuilding After Electoral Setbacks

Speaking at the ANC’s 113th anniversary celebration in Cape Town, Ramaphosa acknowledged the party’s shortcomings and the challenging journey ahead. He reflected on the formation of the GNU, which includes the Democratic Alliance (DA) and other opposition parties, a coalition that has drawn criticism from within the ANC’s alliance partners, including the South African Communist Party (SACP).

The SACP, dissatisfied with the GNU, has announced its intent to contest the 2026 Local Government Elections independently while remaining part of the tripartite alliance.

Lessons from Robben Island

Ahead of the anniversary celebration, ANC leaders visited Robben Island to honor political prisoners who endured years of hardship under apartheid, including Nelson Mandela, Jacob Zuma, and Kgalema Motlanthe.

Ramaphosa highlighted the island’s significance as a symbol of resilience and unity. “We learn from the experience of those imprisoned here that rebuilding a movement requires effective organization, democratic practice, and discipline,” he said.

He drew parallels between the prisoners’ collaborative survival strategies and the party’s need for unity and integrity in its rebuilding efforts.

The ANC has launched door-to-door campaigns in the Western Cape to reconnect with voters and regain lost ground. However, the DA, which has governed the province for years, remains a formidable opponent.

Despite these challenges, Ramaphosa expressed optimism, drawing on the party’s 115-year history of struggle and resilience. “As we work to rebuild the ANC, we are also drawing lessons from Robben Island. Our movement has the strength and capability to overcome its challenges,” he concluded.

The ANC faces a critical period of rebuilding, balancing lessons from its historical legacy with the realities of modern political dynamics. Unity, accountability, and democratic practice will be key as the party strives to reclaim its majority and reconnect with South Africans.
