While a man lost his life due to burn wounds in the George Goch incident, a fire in Kaya Sands gutted 10 shacks, and one person suffered burn wounds.

The causes of these fire incidents are under investigation by EMS inspectors. As the cold weather persists, the EMS emphasises the importance of responsible use of heating appliances, especially in informal settlements. The Public Education Unit of the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services is taking steps to raise awareness and prevent further fire incidents through campaigns such as a door-to-door initiative in the Msawawa informal settlement in Kya Sands. The goal is to safeguard lives and reduce the frequency of fire-related tragedies during the winter months.
